We analysed over five years of Google search data to determine which skincare ingredients Americans search for most, and how dramatically the landscape has shifted since 2020.

The short answer: peptides now dominate American skincare interest by a wide margin nationally - and at the state level, peptide serum has overtaken retinol serum to lead in 18 states, up from 11 in our previous data pull.
- Peptides is the most-searched skincare ingredient in the US with 82,250 average monthly searches in early 2026 - more than the next four ingredients combined.
- Hyaluronic acid reversed a three-year decline to claim the #2 spot, surging from 1,525 monthly searches in 2023 to 18,500 in 2026.
- Retinol dropped from #1 to #3 despite growing 60% since 2020, simply outpaced by faster-growing ingredients.
- The top 3 skincare ingredients have completely reshuffled since 2020, when retinol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C held the top spots.
- Niacinamide crashed 65% between 2021 and 2023, then recovered to reach a new all-time high of 3,250 monthly searches.
The Full Rankings (2026)
We tracked monthly search volumes for "[ingredient] skincare" queries across 13 popular skincare ingredients. This format isolates skincare-specific intent.
A bare search like "peptides" includes fitness, bodybuilding, and supplement queries that have nothing to do with skincare. Adding "skincare" to each ingredient narrows the results to consumers researching ingredients for their skin.

To put peptides' lead in perspective: 82,250 monthly searches is more than the combined total of hyaluronic acid (18,500), retinol (5,500), snail mucin (4,150), and vitamin C (4,000) - combined.
For context, peptides' full-year 2025 average was 19,442, already #1 by a wide margin. Whether the 82,250 early-2026 figure sustains through the year remains to be seen, but peptides' #1 national position has held since 2023.
How the Rankings Changed: 2020 vs 2026
Six years ago, the skincare ingredient landscape looked very different.

Peptides barely registered in 2020 with just 172 monthly searches, ranking near the bottom of our list. By 2023 it had overtaken every other ingredient to reach #1 with 10,300 monthly searches, and has continued to accelerate since.
Vitamin C dropped from #3 to #5 despite maintaining relatively stable search volumes. It didn't decline - it was simply passed by ingredients growing much faster.
Year-Over-Year Growth (2024 to 2025)
To avoid skewing from partial 2026 data, we compared full-year averages from 2024 and 2025:

Hyaluronic acid posted the largest year-over-year increase at +409%, consistent with its resurgence after several years of declining interest. Tretinoin saw the sharpest decline at -53%, and collagen also fell by 19%.

Which Skincare Ingredient Does Your State Search For Most?
Separately from the national rankings above, we analysed Google search interest for five skincare serum keywords across all 50 states and Washington DC.
All five keywords use the same product format - "[ingredient] serum" - for a consistent, like-for-like comparison of purchase and research intent.
State scores use relative search interest (0–100), population-normalised by Google. A score in Wyoming is directly comparable to a score in California regardless of population size.
The keywords: retinol serum, hyaluronic acid serum, peptide serum, vitamin C serum, niacinamide serum.
States scoring 0 for a keyword had insufficient search volume for that ingredient to register in Google's data for that period.
The National Map - April 2026 Update
Peptide serum now leads in 18 states - up from 11 in our previous data. It has overtaken retinol serum as the most widely dominant ingredient across US states, gaining ground in California, Connecticut, Minnesota, Oregon, and others.
Retinol serum still holds 14 states, anchored by Hawaii (score: 100) and Iowa (76). Niacinamide serum gained ground too, rising from 9 to 12 states, with Rhode Island making headlines this update.

Scores represent relative search interest (0–100), population-normalised. A higher score means residents of that state search for that ingredient at a higher rate per capita.

Standout States
Wyoming holds the #1 spot nationally for peptide serum with a perfect score of 100. That's the highest per-capita peptide serum interest in the country, nearly double New York's score (63) and more than double California's (42). Wyoming's second most-searched ingredient is niacinamide serum (47).
Hawaii leads the nation in retinol serum interest with a perfect score of 100 - the highest for any state for any ingredient in this dataset, alongside Wyoming's peptide score. Hawaii is still the country's strongest retinol serum state by a wide margin.
Rhode Island has made the biggest move this update. Niacinamide serum (82) has overtaken retinol serum (79) to become Rhode Island's most-searched skincare product. Rhode Island now has the highest niacinamide serum interest of any state in the country - nearly triple New York's niacinamide score (55). Hyaluronic acid serum (67) is also among the highest nationally for that ingredient.
Iowa remains the biggest retinol serum surprise, scoring 76 - the second highest nationally behind Hawaii (100). Iowa also scores 56 for peptide serum, making it one of the most skincare-engaged states across the board.
New York now leads the Northeast for peptide serum (63), narrowly ahead of New Jersey (62). New York's five-ingredient spread - retinol (57), niacinamide (55), vitamin C (54), HA (48), peptide (63) - shows one of the most even distributions of any state, suggesting diverse ingredient awareness across the population.
Washington DC remains a national outlier, scoring 100 for three ingredients simultaneously (HA serum, vitamin C serum, niacinamide serum) and 84 for peptide serum. It is excluded from state-level comparisons.
Regional Patterns
Peptide serum is taking the coasts. California (42), Connecticut (37), New York (63), New Jersey (62), Oregon (38), and North Carolina (40) all now have peptide serum as their top product search - all states that previously leaned retinol serum.
Retinol serum retreats to the interior and the islands. Hawaii (100), Iowa (76), Massachusetts (61), Pennsylvania (54), South Carolina (50), South Dakota (64), New Mexico (58), Utah (58), Michigan (41), and Louisiana (43) still favour retinol serum. These are some of the country's most committed retinol-serum states.
The South is America's niacinamide belt. Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia, and West Virginia all have niacinamide serum as their most-searched skincare product. Delaware and Vermont match Texas and the South with scores of 55.
The biggest story this update: peptide serum has arrived at the mass market. When peptide serum led only 11 states, it was possible to argue it was a coastal or urban trend. At 18 states - including Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, and Alaska - it's no longer a niche product preference. Peptide serum is going mainstream.
Methodology
Data source: Google search volume and interest data via DataForSEO API. DataForSEO accesses Google's data infrastructure using the same methodology as Google Trends.
Update frequency: State-level data is refreshed monthly. National volume data is updated as new annual periods become available. The data on this page was last pulled on April 13, 2026.
Ingredient selection: We selected 13 ingredients that are commonly discussed in skincare media and consumer education. This is not an exhaustive list. Ingredients such as ceramides, glycolic acid, squalane, and others were not included. The ranking reflects only the ingredients analysed.
National rankings (13 ingredients): We retrieved monthly search volume estimates for 13 "[ingredient] skincare" keyword pairs (e.g., "peptides skincare," "retinol skincare") from August 2020 through February 2026.
Adding "skincare" to each ingredient isolates skincare-specific intent and excludes unrelated queries (e.g., "peptides" for fitness supplements). All volumes represent estimated US monthly searches.
2026 figures reflect January–February 2026 averages only and may not represent full-year trends.
*Sunscreen is a product category rather than a single ingredient, but was included because "sunscreen skincare" is a common consumer search term.
State-level analysis (5 ingredients): We retrieved relative search interest scores for five product-specific keywords: retinol serum, hyaluronic acid serum, peptide serum, vitamin C serum, niacinamide serum.
Data covers all 50 states and Washington DC for the 12 months ending April 2026. All five keywords use the "[ingredient] serum" format to ensure a consistent, like-for-like comparison. All five keywords were retrieved in a single query to ensure scores are comparable across ingredients within the same pull.
Scores are population-normalised by Google, ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the highest proportional search interest in any state for that keyword.
Limitations:
- Search volume data reflects what people search for, not what they buy.
- Search volume estimates are provided by DataForSEO based on Google data. These are modelled estimates, not exact counts.
- State-level data uses relative interest scores, not absolute search volumes. Wyoming scoring 100 for peptide serum does not mean Wyoming has more total searches than New York. It means Wyoming residents search at a higher rate per capita. Smaller states may show more volatile scores due to lower absolute search volumes.
- Not all states returned data for all five ingredients. States with missing data points had insufficient volume for that keyword. A state's #1 ingredient is determined from available data only.
- The national rankings and state-level analysis use different keyword formats ("[ingredient] skincare" vs "[ingredient] serum") and different metrics (raw volume vs relative interest scores). They should be treated as two separate analyses.
- The 2026 national data includes only January and February, and may not be representative of the full year.
- This analysis covers Google search data only and does not include searches on Amazon, TikTok, YouTube, or other platforms.
- This study shows what Americans search for, not why. We did not investigate causal factors behind any trends.
