- Updated the rankings to the trailing twelve months, where peptides lead on 49,500 average monthly searches.
- Added the peak-versus-now table showing peptides down 63% off their April high while retinol and niacinamide sit at twelve-month highs.
- Rebuilt the state map from a single comparative query, which now shows vitamin C serum leading in all 51 jurisdictions.
Okoaskin analyzed over five years of Google search data to determine which skincare ingredients Americans search for most, and how dramatically the landscape has shifted since 2020.
Data pulled: August 27, 2026. Okoaskin updates this page as new data periods become available.
State scores reflect the most recent 12-month period. National volume data reflects 2020-early 2026.
Peptides now dominate American skincare interest by a wide margin nationally - and at the state level, peptide serum has overtaken retinol serum to lead in 18 states, up from 11 in Okoaskin's previous data pull.
- Peptides is still the most-searched skincare ingredient in the US, averaging 49,500 searches a month over August 2025 to July 2026, more than the other nine tracked ingredients combined (34,600).
- Peptides peaked and are falling. Search volume hit 110,000 in April 2026 and stood at 40,500 in July, 63% off the peak.
- Retinol and niacinamide both hit twelve-month highs in July 2026, at 9,900 and 3,600 searches. Retinol interest is rising, not fading.
- Vitamin C serum leads every state. In a comparative pull of five serum terms across all 50 states and DC, vitamin C serum scored highest in all 51, ranging from 25 to 42 out of 100.
- Three ingredients dropped out of the rankings entirely. Tretinoin, bakuchiol and copper peptides no longer clear the reporting threshold.

*The 2026 column in this table is a January-February average from the April 13, 2026 pull and has since been superseded: peptides peaked at 110,000 in April and stood at 40,500 in July. The rankings at the top of this page carry the current figures. Years 2020 to 2025 are unchanged.
The April version of this page reported that peptide serum led in 18 states, retinol serum in 14 and niacinamide serum in 12. That finding does not survive a like-for-like re-pull, and Okoaskin is retracting it.
The error was in how the five maps were compared. Google Trends normalizes each keyword to its own 0-to-100 scale, so every term has some state scoring 100 regardless of how small the term is. Comparing five separately normalized maps as though they shared a scale inflates whichever term has the least absolute volume. Peptide serum is the smallest of the five at 9,900 searches a month against 135,000 for hyaluronic acid serum, so it was the term that error flattered most.
The table below comes from a single query containing all five terms, which is the method this page describes and the one that makes the columns comparable. On that basis vitamin C serum leads in all 51 jurisdictions. The Wyoming and Hawaii standouts reported in April were artifacts of the same normalization and have been removed.
How Big the Five Serum Terms Actually Are
Relative interest scores say nothing about size. These are absolute monthly search volumes for the same five terms, from the same pull, and they explain why the earlier state map was misleading.
| Serum term | Avg. monthly searches |
|---|---|
| Hyaluronic acid serum | 135,000 |
| Vitamin C serum | 90,500 |
| Niacinamide serum | 74,000 |
| Retinol serum | 33,100 |
| Peptide serum | 9,900 |
Every State's Skincare Serum Profile
Scores are relative search interest from 0 to 100, population-normalized by Google, with all five terms retrieved in a single comparative query so the columns are directly comparable to each other. The highest score in each row is highlighted.

Methodology
Data source: Google search volume and interest data via DataForSEO API. DataForSEO accesses Google's data infrastructure using the same methodology as Google Trends.
Update frequency: State-level data is updated as new data periods become available. National volume data is updated as new annual periods become available. The data on this page was last pulled on April 13, 2026.
Ingredient selection: Okoaskin selected 13 ingredients that are commonly discussed in skincare media and consumer education. This is not an exhaustive list. Ingredients such as ceramides, glycolic acid, squalane, and others were not included. The ranking reflects only the ingredients analyzed.
National rankings (13 ingredients): Okoaskin retrieved monthly search volume estimates for 13 [ingredient] skincare keyword pairs (e.g., peptides skincare, retinol skincare) from August 2020 through February 2026.
Adding skincare to each ingredient isolates skincare-specific intent and excludes unrelated queries (e.g., peptides for fitness supplements). All volumes represent estimated US monthly searches.
2026 figures reflect January-February 2026 averages only and may not represent full-year trends.
*Sunscreen is a product category rather than a single ingredient, but was included because sunscreen skincare is a common consumer search term.
State-level analysis (5 ingredients): Okoaskin retrieved relative search interest scores for five product-specific keywords: retinol serum, hyaluronic acid serum, peptide serum, vitamin C serum, niacinamide serum.
Data covers all 50 states and Washington DC for the 12 months ending April 2026. All five keywords use the [ingredient] serum format to ensure a consistent, like-for-like comparison. All five keywords were retrieved in a single query to ensure scores are comparable across ingredients within the same pull.
Scores are population-normalized by Google, ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the highest proportional search interest in any state for that keyword.
Limitations:
- Search volume data reflects what people search for, not what they buy.
- Search volume estimates are provided by DataForSEO based on Google data. These are modeled estimates, not exact counts.
- State-level data uses relative interest scores, not absolute search volumes. Wyoming scoring 100 for peptide serum does not mean Wyoming has more total searches than New York. It means Wyoming residents search at a higher rate per capita. Smaller states may show more volatile scores due to lower absolute search volumes.
- Not all states returned data for all five ingredients. States with missing data points had insufficient volume for that keyword. A state's #1 ingredient is determined from available data only.
- The national rankings and state-level analysis use different keyword formats ([ingredient] skincare vs [ingredient] serum) and different metrics (raw volume vs relative interest scores). They should be treated as two separate analyses.
- The 2026 national data includes only January and February, and may not be representative of the full year.
- This analysis covers Google search data only and does not include searches on Amazon, TikTok, YouTube, or other platforms.
- This study shows what Americans search for, not why. Okoaskin did not investigate causal factors behind any trends.
Data availability: The full dataset is published as a spreadsheet with the method, the raw figures and the state-level scores: download the workbook.
Okoaskin Dual Action Lifting Cream
The peptide behind the #1 search term
Peptides top this ranking, number one by a wide margin. IDEALIFT (acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester) is the one Okoaskin builds on. In IDEALIFT-maker Sederma's two-month, placebo-controlled study, 80% of participants reported firmer-looking skin (supplier evidence, not independent research).
Skin that has lost firmness along the jaw and neck rather than wrinkled responds to peptides such as IDEALIFT (acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester), which supports the elastin network that keeps skin springy. The Okoaskin Dual Action Lifting Cream is $44.88 on subscription ($61.90 one-time) with a 90-day money-back guarantee.
